National Weather Service Seattle office forecasters warned that, with temperatures in the 20s in western Whatcom County this morning and yesterday’s brief snowmelt, black ice will be a problem especially on bridges and overpasses. Possibly related, a semi truck was reported blocking all lanes of Pacific Highway between W Smith Road and Slater Road this morning about 7:30am.
Blustery winds created driving challenges this morning as snow was being blown into drifts on recently plowed roads including the Guide Meridian north of Lynden and also I-5 near Ferndale. Vehicles were reported getting stuck in the drifts.
There continued to be weather-related closures and late openings announced around the Ferndale area today.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by later this morning reaching nearly upper-30s by the time precipitation arrives. But forecasters say the precipitation could start as snow and transition to rain.
Temperatures are expected to remain near or above freezing through the weekend. The chance of precipitation will range between 10% and 70% during the same period. Forecasters expect it to fall as rain during the warmer daytime hours and potentially as light snow or freezing rain during the colder overnight hours.
With overnight lows close to freezing, any snowmelt will refreeze continuing the threat of black ice during morning hours through the weekend.
