FERNDALE, Wash. — About 5:45pm this evening, April 9th, first responders were dispatched to the southbound lanes of I-5 south of Main Street for a report of rollover collision.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said the driver of a silver Acura 4-door sedan said they ended up rolling after making an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision.
The Acura was reportedly southbound on I-5 in the left lane when a Ford hatchback in the right lane merged into the left lane and the Acura driver swerved into the median to avoid a collision. The Acura then returned to the roadway, crossing both lanes and leaving the roadway on the west side. It snapped off a single post sign and rolled, ending up on its side.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said the driver was the only person in the Acura and was able to get out on their own. The driver was treated and released at the scene by aid crews.
Axtman said they are treating the incident as a possible hit-and-run but conceded the driver of the Ford may not have been aware of the crash when they left the scene.
