Each winter, WSDOT closes the narrow section of road with sharp curves and steep slopes to vehicle traffic.

Once this section of road is reopened, more than 650 vehicles/day travel to Artist Point to hike, camp & recreate.
The project was previously scheduled to begin today.
Work is scheduled on I-5, Mount Baker Highway, E Badger Road and Everson Goshen Road.
WSDOT officials say the last 4 miles of the Mount Baker Highway (SR542) will be temporarily closed next week.
The study is looking at options for pedestrians, bicyclists and those using mobility devices to travel.
The next closest rest areas are in the Bow Hill area of I-5, about 30 miles to the south.
Delays can be expected around these projects and alternate routes are recommended.
As of 8:45am, traffic was backed up for 4 miles to the Main Street interchange in Ferndale.
