CHERRY POINT, Wash. — Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) personnel were dispatched to the Cherry Point BP Refinery on Grandview Road about 10:25am on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Airlift NW was placed on standby but was not required.
WCFD7 Fire Chief Ben Boyko told Whatcom News they transported 3 patients to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center, 2 via basic life support (BLS) and 1 via advanced life support (ALS).
People nearby reported hearing a loud concussive noise prior to hearing the sirens of responding apparatus. People on site report being evacuated and those on later shifts being asked not to report.
The bp Cherry Point refinery is responding to an incident at the facility today. The situation is contained and does not pose a risk to nearby communities. We can confirm four [later updated to 3] people have been injured and have been transported to a local hospital. All other staff is accounted for. Our top priority is the safety of our employees, contractors, and the community. We will share additional information as it becomes available.

The refinery’s maintenance turnaround is scheduled to conclude this coming week.
An incident at the bp Cherry Point Refinery on the morning of Saturday, April 18, led to three people sustaining injuries that required further evaluation at a local hospital. These individuals have now been treated and released. All other staff are accounted for. Our primary concern remains the well-being of these individuals, along with the safety of our workforce and the community. We are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. The incident was contained this morning and did not pose a risk to the surrounding community.
