Multiple crashes on I-5 with ice-covered road surfaces this morning

FERNDALE, Wash. — Low temperatures and high humidity created icy road conditions in northwest Whatcom County this morning, February 3rd.

A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper responding to an injury rollover crash on I-5 reported via an unconfirmed radio transmission the roadway was icy from Ferndale northward especially in the less-traveled passing lane.

First responders were dispatched to the rollover crash about 7:40am between Loomis Trail Road and the Peace Portal Driver interchange. Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said 1 person from that incident was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

About 8:10am, they were also dispatched to another crash in the area of the Grandview Road and I-5 interchange.

About 8:30am, WSP responded to another rollover crash on I-5 near Birch Bay-Lynden Road. This was reported to be non-injury. There was another non-injury rollover involving a trailer that detached from the pickup pulling it in the area of Zell Road and I-5.

Temperatures were in the low 30s with humidity rates in the upper 90s in the northwest county at the time according to multiple weather stations in the area.
