County Shortens Fireworks Season in 2016

Correction: This article previously ran without noting the change doesn’t go into effect until July 1st, 2016. We regret the error.

An ordinance passed during the June 23rd Whatcom County Council meeting adds a “Period of Use” section to the Whatcom County Code section 5.20 (Fireworks) which restricts legally discharging fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county to July 3rd to July 5th as well as on New Years. Specifically, the hours allowed are:

July 3rd from 6pm to 11pm
July 4th from 6pm to midnight
July 5th from 6pm to 11pm
December 31st from 6pm to 1am on January 1st

This ordinance was initially introduced during the June 9th County Council meeting by Barbara Brenner and was passed unanimously at the June 23rd meeting.

Current fireworks restrictions within the City of Ferndale allow for discharging fireworks from June 28th to July 5th. And this will be restricted to July 1st to the 4th next year, 2016. The County Code applies to areas outside the Ferndale city limits.
