Occupants in a Volvo passenger car who fled the scene of an early morning crash Monday, May 6th, caused by a wrong-way driver on southbound I-5 are still being sought according to the Washington State Patrol.

WSP Trooper Heather Axtman said a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban that was heading northbound in the southbound lanes of I-5 south of the Grandview Road interchange collided with a southbound 2004 Volvo passenger car. There were 2 occupants in the Volvo and both reportedly fled the scene.

The Volvo was towed from the scene and during the process of inventorying the vehicle’s contents the troopers discovered drug paraphernalia, Axtman said.

Axtman said there remains an active investigation into fleeing the scene of a crash and another regarding possible charges related to the drug paraphernalia.

The driver of the Suburban, identified as Brian Keith Pittman, age 34, was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and then was booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
