FERNDALE, Wash. — City of Ferndale Public Works reopened W Smith Road west of LaBounty Drive shortly this morning after asphalt damage forced them to close the road Friday, December 21st.

Ferndale Public Works Supervisor Bo Westford said surface water flooding receded enough recently that they were able to pump the remainder to inspect and repair the road surface. “We found and repaired a large hole; bigger than a pothole,” Westford said in a phone interview.

Surface water flowing north to south across the road has been due to overflowing from ponds and swales located to the north between Hovander Road and LaBounty Drive.

This section of road was closed for a day due to surface water flooding in late November and for another extended period due to roadway damage in June.

The road is well-traveled by people heading to and from Hovander Homestead Park and Tennant Lake as well as several businesses including Superfeet International, Hertco Kitchens, Hempler Foods Group and Northwest Fence.
