FERNDALE, Wash. — Today, Friday, March 20th, is the first day of grab-and-go meal distribution to allow families most threatened by school closures to pick up free meals with minimal contact.
Governor Jay Inslee issued a proclamation to close all public and private schools in the state beginning March 17th through at least April 24th in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19 virus. This action interrupted access to food and other services available to students in families that rely on the free and reduced-price meal program.
Following that proclamation Inslee noted to school employees, “this is not a vacation” and Washington Office of Public Instruction Superintendent Chris Reykdal identified access to food and childcare as priorities.
Many students rely on school meals to meet their nutritional needs. Additionally, as this outbreak begins to impact the economic environment, we know more families may find themselves needing assistance. During these school closures, school districts may provide breakfast and lunch to any student, regardless of their family income, at the location(s) designated by the district.
