BELLINGHAM, Wash. — As of 8:45am, southbound I-5 traffic was backed up 3 miles to the Main Street interchange in Ferndale while the right lane of southbound I-5 had just been reopened after Washington State Patrol (WSP) investigated a fatal car versus pedestrian collision between the Slater Road and W Bakerview Road interchanges.
First responders were dispatched about 6:30am on Friday, October 7th, to the southbound lanes due to a report of a car versus pedestrian collision.
WSP Trooper Kelsey Harding confirmed at 8:30am that this was a fatality incident.
A press memo from WSP said a 1998 Ford Ranger was southbound on I-5 when it began driving on the right shoulder when it struck a pedestrian. Drugs/alcohol were considered to have been involved.
As of 11am, the driver, Lowell Foster Mase, age 68 and of Bellingham, was arrested and being booked into Whatcom County Jail by WSP charged with suspicion of vehicular homicide while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug and while driving in a reckless manner.
