Updated: Burlington man wanted, suspected of rape and assault

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A warrant was issued in Whatcom County Superior Court on Tuesday, June 11th, for the arrest of a 26-year-old man identified as Brennan Melvin Haggstrom. According to court documents, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) investigators suspect Haggstrom of sexually assaulting an acquaintance.

The affidavit of probable cause to arrest Haggstrom states the victim had been out drinking with Haggstrom and others. The victim stated she did not finish 2 drinks provided but felt disoriented. During the remainder of the evening, Haggstrom reportedly assaulted her multiple times while she told him to stop and attempted to forcibly stop him.

As a result of the investigation, Haggstrom is facing the following felony charges in Superior Court.

  • 1st-degree rape inflicting serious injury
  • 2 counts 2nd-degree assault with forcible strangulation
  • indecent liberties with forcible compulsion

On June 3rd, Haggstrom came to the WCSO to be interviewed. He stopped answering questions and requested a lawyer be present once the victim’s name was mentioned. He was told of the arrest warrant and advised to turn himself in by June 5th but had not as of June 13th.

Update: Whatcom County Jail records indicate that Haggstrom was booked into the jail about 5:25pm on Thursday, June 13th, charged with suspicion of 1st-degree rape.
