Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced today, Saturday, November 11th, that the North Cascades Highway (SR20) is temporarily closed as of 10am due to heavy snowfall.
We’ve already seen as much as 4-6 inches of snow per hour and some small snow slides. We hope this is temporary and will evaluate on Monday, Nov. 13. Washington State Department of Transportation (November 11, 2023)
The closure points will be at the Ross Dam trailhead (milepost 134) on the west side and at the Silver Star Sno-Park gate, 7 miles west of Early Winters (milepost 171) on the east side.
In addition, Cayuse (SR123) and Chinook Passes (SR410) have also been temporarily closed due to icy conditions. Conditions to reopen will also be evaluated on Monday.
All three roads are typically closed during winter months and these temporary closures could end up being the start of seasonal closures.
Update Monday, November 13th: WSDOT reported the North Cascades Highway will remain closed until it can be assessed again tomorrow, Tuesday.
Update Tuesday, November 14th: WSDOT reported the North Cascades Highway remains closed due to snow slide risks. The conditions will be assessed again Wednesday morning.
