Woman, suspect of DUI, reportedly flees Ferndale police on a flat tire while luggage falls out of trunk

FERNDALE, Wash. — A 38-year-old woman was arrested yesterday, Tuesday, October17th, by Ferndale Police following a brief pursuit after she had been located in a car stuck in a ditch.

According to details provided to Whatcom News by the Ferndale Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of Thornton Street and Aquarius Avenue due to a report of a single-vehicle crash. The vehicle was reported to have been driven into the ditch and was stuck.

Officers arrived and located the vehicle which was stuck in the ditch and was occupied by the female driver. While Officers were speaking with the driver, they noted indicators of intoxication.

The driver was ordered out of the vehicle, but instead, she shifted the vehicle into drive and was able to drive out of the ditch and away. The officers on scene pursued the fleeing vehicle.

The vehicle was reportedly driven in a reckless manner with a flat tire. The rear hatch was open and there was luggage falling out of the rear cargo area onto the roadway.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Pacific Highlands and Locharron Drive.

An officer pulled their patrol vehicle in front of the stopped vehicle to prevent it from fleeing further and was rammed into on the front passenger side of the patrol vehicle.

Officers broke out the passenger side window of the fleeing vehicle in order to place it into park and shut off the car.

The driver was identified as Stephanie Lee Hendrickson.

Hendrickson was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of the following crimes.

  • driving under the influence
  • hit and run
  • attempting to elude a police vehicle
  • 2nd-degree malicious mischief

As of October 18th, Hendrickson remained in custody at the jail pending being able to post $10,000 bond or $1,000 cash bail.
