Winds and rains expected to continue Sunday, road closures announced

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A weather system bringing heavy rain and gusty winds arrived at western Washington and Whatcom County as expected on Saturday, October 19th.

There were several localized and relatively short-lived power outages reported across Whatcom County on Saturday. Up to several hundred Puget Sound Energy customer addresses were impacted during each.

Saturday afternoon, forecasters with the Seattle office of the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory from 3pm on Saturday through 4pm on Sunday, October 20th. The advisory statement said to expect sustained southerly winds of 15 to 30mph with gusts up to 45mph.

The wind advisory is in effect for western Whatcom and Skagit Counties, Island County and the Admiralty Inlet area. It is said to expect the strongest winds near the water.

Officials with Whatcom County Public Works announced the following road impacts and closures due to weather, downed trees and/or power lines as of 6pm on Saturday.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue into Sunday creating “an elevated threat for urban and small stream flooding.”

The current Nooksack River level forecasts show dramatic increases in the river level though Sunday, October 20th, while cresting below flood stage.

  • CLOSED: E Axton Road, west of Hannegan Road
  • WATER OVER ROADWAY: H Street Road near Sage Street
  • CLOSED: Lake Whatcom Boulevard between Cain Lake Road and Lake Louise Road (Updated 9pm)
  • LANE CLOSED: N Pass Road at Nordum Road
