WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) say a permanent change to the speed limit on a section of I-5 in Skagit County beginning tomorrow, January 15, 2025, is due to safety concerns.
The transitions from 70mph to 60mph for southbound traffic and 60mph to 70mph for northbound traffic have been at points near the SR20 interchange in Burlington. They will be moved about 3 miles north to points near the Cook Road interchange.
The 10 years, traffic increased by ~8,000 vehicles/day thru this section of I-5.
The reduced speed helps SB I-5 drivers to slow down before reaching back-to-back curves near SR 11/Chuckanut Dr & slowing near SR 20’s interchange, where high traffic volumes enter/exit the freeway.
From 8:30AM-10:30PM, 1/15, crews will close the left lane of southbound I-5 in Burlington between SR 20 & Cook Rd to install new speed limit signs.
