Deputies arrest active shooting suspect in Bellingham apartment

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) said Tuesday, March 21st, that they had arrested a man suspected of firing multiple rounds from a weapon in a Bellingham apartment complex.

According to today’s press release, deputies were dispatched on Monday, March 20th, around 1:45am, after numerous reports of multiple shots fired were received from an apartment complex in the 3400 block of W Mcleod Road.

As deputies approached, a series of shots were fired as can be heard in the following WCSO body cam video.

It was unknown if anyone or anything were being shot at according to the press release.

Additional resources were requested from Bellingham Police Department (BPD), Washington State Patrol and Homeland Security. WCSO’s SWAT also responded. Whatcom County Public Works responded to close the road until the area could be secured.

While using a BPD drone to maintain “situational awareness,” WCSO deputies entered the complex in a BPD armored vehicle and located the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jeremy Spotted Bear from Bellingham.

Negotiators and tactical personnel were able to gain the suspect’s compliance and he surrendered without further incident. He was booked into Whatcom County Jail according to the press release.

Deputies found 2 handguns in his apartment and 15 spent shell casings on his patio and the ground below.

According to jail records, Spotted Bear is charged with reckless endangerment and 2 counts of aiming/discharging firearms. He was released from custody after posting a $1,000 appearance bond in Whatcom County District Court.
