FERNDALE, Wash. — Last year at this time it was reported Boys & Girls Club of Whatcom County had ended their decades-long youth tackle football programs but 2 programs were in place to pick up the slack. This year, 1 program remains according to organizers.

Ferndale Youth Sports has been organizing youth sports since 2010 and their youth tackle football teams play in the North Cascade Youth Football League. There are teams for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8.

Registration for the 2019 season is currently open. Organizers say early registration is needed to allow time for participants to be fitted and to order their gear and jerseys in time for the start of the season.

It’s time to put an end to the countless injuries caused by tackle football. I suggest everyone look at the sorry state of the NFL for further troubling guidance.

Instead, we should encourage youngsters to learn, be curious, explore the world around them and build the foundation for a productive life.
