WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Old Samish Road will close to through traffic in both directions starting about 5am on Monday, April 27, 2026.
The road runs parallel to I-5 from N Lake Samish Drive at I-5 exit 246 and connects with Chuckanut Drive (SR11). The road will remain closed until the end of 2026. Local access will be permitted from the east and west to the closure point near Chuckanut Creek.
The closure is the enable contractor crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to build a 2-lane bypass for southbound I-5 traffic. This work is part of a project correcting 17 barriers near Lake Samish. Northbound I-5 will also use a 2-lane bypass while barriers are corrected under those lanes.
After southbound I-5 returns to its alignment, a fish passable structure will be installed beneath the county road.
A 2013 federal court injunction requires the state to replace culverts that are barriers to salmon and steelhead migration in western Washington.
