According to the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH), the public is advised not to eat recalled Sierra Nevada Graziers raw milk cheese products.
A nationwide recall was issued after the products were linked to at least 13 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infections across 9 states. WA DOH reported 0 cases in Washington connected to the recall as of October 7, 2026.
The cheeses were distributed nationwide through distributors, retailers and directly to customers. Recalled products include the following grass-fed raw milk cheeses.
- medium cheddar
- sharp cheddar
- jalapeño jack
- Monterey jack
Retail products were sold in 8-oz and 16-oz packages and food service or wholesale products were distributed in 5-lb loaves. A list of affected products is available on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.
WA DOH advised consumers to discard the cheeses or return them to the purchase location for a refund. Recommendations from WA DOH include the following.
- check refrigerators and freezers for the recalled cheeses and discard them due to long shelf life
- wash items and surfaces that contacted the cheeses using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher
Symptoms of E. coli infection can last from a few days to a few weeks and include stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. WA DOH advised anyone who consumed the recalled cheese and develops symptoms to consult a health care provider.
Individuals who suspect illness from the products can contact Whatcom County Health and Community Services officials at 360-778-6000 or submit a report through the Foodborne Illness Notification System online form.
