WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced the North Cascades Highway (SR20) will close temporarily beginning Friday, November 15th at 5pm. It will be closed between milepost 134 near the Ross Dam trailhead and milepost 171 at the Silver Star SnoPark.

The closure is due to snow levels dropping to about 2,500 feet through the weekend with heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet are possible with more expected over the highest peaks. A winter storm watch has been issued for the west slopes of the north and central Cascades and passes from late tonight through 10pm on Monday, November 18th.

Snow may briefly transition to rain through Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes Saturday night before changing back to snow Sunday evening. Slushy conditions are possible where rain occurs.

WSDOT avalanche and maintenance teams will assess the potential for reopening the highway on Monday.

WSDOT warns motorists that they should be prepared in the event this results in the beginning of the season’s months-long closure.
