BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police arrested and charged Victor Hugo Ambrocio, age 41, with suspicion of making a bomb threat today, January 23, 2025.
Bellingham Police Department Lieutenant Claudia Murphy told Whatcom News in an email that on September 25, 2024, officers were dispatched to about 5:30pm to a report that a bomb threat had been phoned into the What-Comm 911 Dispatch Center. The threat targeted a Bellingham shopping mall.
The caller specifically stated a bomb would go off within 10 minutes and then hung up without providing any further information. Officers responded to the mall and with the aid of Mall Security searched the building for anything suspicious but did not locate anything. A thorough investigation followed, and officers discovered, by way of phone subscriber information and interviews, that AMBROCIO borrowed a phone and made the bomb threat call to 9-1-1. Further information showed that AMBROCIO made the call specifically because he saw a patrol car in the Fred Meyer parking lot, near his drug dealer. The call was meant to divert attention and have the patrol car leave.
On 1-23-25 at approximately 1:27 a.m., an officer made traffic stop in the 4100 block of Bennett Dr., and the investigating officer of this case recognized AMBROCIO as a passenger in the car. He was arrested on an outstanding warrant and probable cause for this investigation.
