Lake Terrill Water Association customers have been advised to boil their water until further notice due to a positive test for E. coli bacteria today. According to an association contact, since there are only 50 customers on the system, they were able to be contacted in person and provided information about the advisory.
Association customers are being advised to boil water before drinking or using for washing and cooking. Proper care should be given to bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and then letting it cool before using. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
According to an advisory given to their customers ,
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has been notified and Lake Terrill Water Association is working to find the source of contamination and fix the problem which includes adding Chlorine to disinfect the entire system beginning May 4th. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
We have already added Chlorine to the storage tanks to begin the disinfection process and we will maintain a high chlorine residual in the system through the weekend. We will be flushing the system this Thursday May 5th from 8 AM to 5 PM to ensure that Chlorine is throughout the system for thorough disinfection.
Next week we will allow the Chlorine to dissipate on its own and then begin to collect follow up samples to ensure that the water is safe to drink. Once we are confident the water is safe to drink we will return the system to normal and issue a notice lifting the Boil Water Advisory.
According to the association website, they are a member-owned, non-profit association located in Ferndale. The association has been in operation since 1951. Customers are located in the area around the intersection of N Star Road and Aldergrove Road.
