Four flags, out of the approximately 150 put out downtown by the Ferndale Kiwanis to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day in December, were missing when volunteers went out to bring in the flags at the end of the day.

It was estimated at the time it would cost $35 or more per flag to replace the flags displayed along Main Street and 2nd Avenue on commemorative days throughout the year. Since then, according to Kiwanis member Pete Harksell, Jr., Dave Hughes of East View Blueberry Farm had helped cover the cost of replacing a flag.

During the Kiwanis’ meeting last Tuesday at Mt Baker Lanes, representatives from the BP Cherry Point Refinery Veterans Business Resource Group presented the club with 3 replacement American flags.

Detrick Grimes, co-lead of the BP group, was joined by fellow BP group member, Steve Barton. Grimes thanked the Kiwanis for their service to the community. “As a veteran, it was particularly meaningful to have the opportunity to replace these flags which represent the freedoms we have thanks to the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make every day,” Grimes said.

Also attending from BP were Annie Sorich and Anthony Wells, both BP Cherry Point Refinery employees and members of the Kiwanis along with BP Special Projects Advisor Mary Milley.
