WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the Sunset Drive I-5 overpass shortly before 1pm. Shortly after both the northbound and southbound lanes were closed to traffic
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported the closures were due to an incident with traffic being diverted off I-5 at Sunset Drive and at Iowa Street.

As of 2pm, the situation remained unchanged.

Bellingham Police Department released a statement saying the Sunset Drive overpass was also closed in both directions. They noted there is no danger to the public.

About 2:40pm, WSDOT reported the southbound lanes have been reopened. And shortly after, the northbound lanes were reopened.
Bellingham Police reported about 3pm, “BPD and BFD responded to a person in crisis near I5 and Sunset. Out of an abundance of caution, we made the decision to close the bridge deck and both lanes of I5. The situation resolved itself peacefully and the individual is receiving the assistance needed.”
