FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Whatcom County Old Settlers Association announced they will be featuring a hot air balloon glow event on Friday, July 28th, during the Old Settlers Picnic event at Pioneer Park in Ferndale.
Glow event organizers say 5 to 10 balloons are expected. “The hot air balloons do not take off and fly during balloon glows, and they are secured to the chase vehicle. The cool part about balloon glows is that it allows kids and adults to see the balloons up close and ask the balloon pilots lots of questions.”
Balloonists are expected to begin setting up, weather permitting, about 8:30pm with the “Glow” beginning about 9pm.
As an added bonus, balloonists are expected to launch, weather permitting, from different “secret locations” around Whatcom County shortly after sunrise the following Saturday and Sunday. Organizers said, “Launch sites are not shared with the general public as the launch sites are private property and change based on the winds. If you want to see the balloons fly, look up 15 minutes after sunrise.”
There was a balloon glow event during the recent 2021 125th Old Settlers Picnic and the Hulaballoon hot air balloon glow was a regular event in Ferndale until it ceased to be over 10 years ago.
