35mph speed limit extended south of Bellingham on Chuckanut Drive (SR11)

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) implemented a permanent speed limit reduction on nearly 9 miles of Chuckanut Drive, south of Bellingham.

On April 17, 2026, WSDOT maintenance crews installed 35mph speed limit signs on a section of road between Blanchard Road in Skagit County to south of Spokane Street in Whatcom County. The section spans mileposts 9 and 18. This new zone connects to an existing 35mph zone near the Fairhaven Park entrance at milepost 20.

The section of road between mileposts 9 and 10 remains at 40mph to serve as a transition from higher speeds further south.

The 35mph limit became enforceable upon the installation of the signs. According to WSDOT, traffic engineers reviewed corridor data following inquiries regarding speed limits and recreational activity before reducing the limit from 40mph.
