Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Justin Iverson said the driver of a moped was transported by medics to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in serious condition after the moped collided with a car in the intersection of W Smith Road and Barrett Road today, May 13th, about 2:40pm.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said the moped driver’s injuries were considered non-life threatening.

My sympathies are with the moped driver. I recently purchased an electric bike. (Love it! I’ve bicycled all over the country, and commuted thousands of miles on a bicycle, but arthritis and a heart condition stole my wheels. An eBike has given them back.)
Leaving Ferndale via Main/Axton on a bicycle is hair raising, but for some destinations, almost unavoidable. My advice to other bicyclists: Keep in mind just how fragile you are. One of those tandem loads of gas from the refineries wouldn’t even notice if they sucked you into the draft between the tanks and flattened you. At some points, you can’t avoid being inches from certain death. Be predictable and remember how hard it is for an even slightly tired and inattentive driver to see you. Wear orange. Have lights. Be careful.
My advice to drivers of fuel trucks, tiny “Smart Stupid” cars and everything in between:
