Hamilton man pled guilty to controlled substance homicide in death of 28-year-old coworker

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Derik A Shooster, age 32 of Hamilton (Skagit County), pled guilty to a charge of controlled substance homicide in the April 6th death of a coworker to whom he had sold a fentanyl laced counterfeit Percocet pill and died of an overdose later that day.

Shooster was sentenced in Whatcom County Superior Court on July 15th to 5 years in prison plus 1 year of community custody for the homicide charge.

He also pled guilty to a charge of delivery of a controlled substance (Percocet/fentanyl) and a charge of delivery of a counterfeit controlled substance. Each of these 2 charges resulted in a sentence of 20 months in prison to be served concurrently with the 5-year sentence.

Washington State court records indicate Shooster has appeared as a defendant in 25 cases in Skagit County District Court and other district and municipal courts since 2007 including 4 cases in 2021. He had no prior felony convictions according to the court’s sentencing document.
