A grass fire was reported at 11:30am today in the 3100 block of Mountain View Road.
Several Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) apparatus were dispatched. Initial reports were the grass fire was heading into a wooded area.
Fire crews had knocked down the fire by noon and were performing mop up duties.
Officials were unavailable to speak regarding the cause of the fire.
WCFD7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said it appeared the fire started in a burn pile at the back of the property and spread to a nearby field and trees. No structures were involved.
Boyko pointed out that vegetation is starting to dry out and a generous growing season means the fuel load is high. There have already been grass fires over the past few days and Boyko says it only took a light breeze to increase the severity of these fires.
People are advised to visit the Fire Marshal’s website for best practices and knowledge of what burning is allowed.
