UPDATED: Gas theft suspect leads law enforcement on chase

A suspect vehicle in a gas theft took off from Northwest Drive and W Smith Road and led law enforcement through Ferndale and into Marietta this morning.

Radio transmissions indicate the suspects were seen siphoning gas around 7:45am at a Northwest Drive location. When law enforcement tried to pull over the suspects’ black Chevrolet Suburban on W Smith Road, it took off at high-speed.

Law enforcement vehicles from multiple agencies joined the pursuit as the vehicle headed west on W Smith Road eventually heading west on Slater Road and then south on Ferndale Road to Marine Drive. The pursuit then headed east to Hoff Road and then north to Country Road.

The two passengers in the Suburban got out and were detained by law enforcement. The Suburban was spotted in a ditch a short ways away but the driver was not with it.

At the time of this article, law enforcement had set up a perimeter around the area and were methodically searching for the driver.

More details will be added as they are made available.

UPDATE 7:40am
All suspects have been taken into custody. K-9 unit was required to locate and apprehend the driver in blackberry bushes.

UPDATE 3:30pm
Earlier today, Michael L. Shurte, Sr., age 60, was booked at the Whatcom County Jail for attempting to elude a police vehicle and 2nd degree theft.
