Several in the downtown area got a rude awakening about 1:30am when there were what sounded to some as fireworks going off accompanied by, as one witness put it, “a huge explosion.”
According to radio dispatches, fire/aid units responded soon after to the 5700 block of Vista Drive for injuries from an explosive burn. Ferndale police were also dispatched to the area.
According to police radio transmissions, the aid unit transported the patient to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.
Another witness said smoke filled the parking lot of the apartments nearby after the explosion.
UPDATE 9AM:
Reports are a Ferndale High School senior injured his hand by holding a fireworks that exploded. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle a few hours later.
UPDATE 3PM:
A reliable source close to the family reported the victim’s hand needed to be amputated.
