FERNDALE, Wash. — Law enforcement personnel were dispatched to the Sandy Point area about 6am on Friday, May 8, 2026, due to report of a suspicious person rummaging through mailboxes.
Law enforcement obtained a resident’s security video showing the suspect.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the area and set up a perimeter. They were assisted by a Department of Homeland Security helicopter, K9 units and an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone).

About 8:45am, law enforcement began approaching a residence in the 4000 block of Tsata Lane. About 8:50am, they reported the suspect was in custody.
About 10am, Lummi Nation Police issued the following statement.
Today at 0552 hrs. LNPD Officers with LNPD were dispatched to a suspicious person call in the 4700 block of Sucia Dr. While Officers were in the area investigating, surveillance footage from a resident revealed the “suspicious person” was the suspect in shooting that occurred in the City of Ferndale earlier in the evening.
LNPD Officers, WCSO Deputies, Bellingham PD K-9, along with a helicopter from Border Patrol surrounded the area, attempting to re-locate the person. Information was later revealed they were possibly hiding in a trailer behind a residence off of Sucia Dr. Officers with LNPD checked the location and were able to safely take the person into custody. The suspect was later transported to Ferndale PD for further investigation.
It should also be noted that, LNPD’s new K-9 was able to successfully locate what is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting while searching the area!!!

About 10:50am, Ferndale Police provided Whatcom News with the following information.
On Friday, May 8, 2026, at approximately 3:34 a.m., Ferndale Police Officers responded to the 2300 block of Ferndale Terrace following reports of a shooting. Prior to officers’ arrival, the suspect fled the scene. The victim was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
At approximately 8:52 a.m., an individual matching the suspect’s description was observed on Sucia Drive in Sandy Point. Deputies with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Lummi Nation Police Department, Bellingham Police Department, Washington State Patrol, and US Border Patrol responded to the area, located the individual, and confirmed he was the suspect connected to this incident. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
