FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Ferndale School District say a farewell celebration is planned for the Old Main building on the Ferndale High School campus. The building has stood on the campus since 1936.

The building is scheduled for demolition along with other existing buildings to make room for new buildings, lawns, roads and parking areas for the Ferndale High School. Demolition is scheduled during the upcoming months.

A 6-foot-wide and 11-foot-tall white cupula (aka “the dome”) that stood atop the Old Main building until being put in storage in 1985, was relocated to its new home at Pioneer Park in 2015.
New plumbing, heating, electrical systems, floors surfaces and wall coverings were installed in 1986 as part of a modernization project.
During the campaign for the bond to fund the campus rebuild, proponents said the cost to remodel Old Main was excessive due to the presence of hazardous materials and needed upgrades.
The City of Ferndale reportedly approached the Ferndale School District in 2019 regarding the possibility for the city to purchase the building to house municipal services including administrative offices and a courtroom. It was later estimated it would cost approximately $11.2 million to bring the building up to current standards and provided the necessary floorplans for the intended uses by the city. It was noted at the time that this would be in addition to the cost to purchase the building. The proposal was ultimately withdrawn.
