Ferndale City Council to convene Monday to fill vacant council position, approve Planning Commission appointments

FERNDALE, Wash. — The 6 remaining members of the Ferndale City Council are scheduled to meet Monday, January 4th, at 5pm via online videoconference for the first regular meeting of the council for 2021.

The first items on the agenda are to evaluate and vote on candidates to take over the seat held by former Councilmember Ramon Llanos before his retirement. The replacement will be sworn in and immediately take their seat on the dais. They will be expected to serve until someone can be elected during the 2021 General Election.

Public Works Director Kevin Renz is scheduled to provide a presentation on capital projects such as the City Annex and Court Improvement Project, Complete Streets Project, Pump Station 19 Decommission, Shop Well #2 – Wellhouse Project, Thornton Street Overpass Project and the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade.

The City Council will be asked to approve appointees to the Planning Commission as provided by Mayor Greg Hansen. According to the agenda materials, Hansen has reappointed Sean Cool, Jo Ann Moore and Maralise Fegan to new 4-year terms expiring at the end of 2024. Connie Faria chose not to return for another term so Hansen will be asking the Council to approve his appointee, Mike Contezac, to the 4-term on the Planning Commission as her replacement.

Regular City Council meetings are being held using an online video conference format in conformance with current physical distancing and the state’s COVID-19 health safety mandates.

Anyone wanting to watch the online meeting live can click this link just prior to or during the meeting. Nothing needs to be installed since attendees can choose to “watch on the web” via their browser and “join” the video conference anonymously. Attendees’ video and audio inputs will be disabled to prevent meeting disruptions while attendees will still be able to view and hear the meeting participants.

City Council meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month (or on the following Tuesday in event of a national holiday) and typically (when not held online) in Council Chambers at the City Hall Annex at 5694 2nd Avenue. Related regular council meeting documents are available online.
