Father and son charged with armed burglary

A Ferndale father and son have both been charged with burglary while armed with a firearm after an incident at the Super 8 Motel.

According to Whatcom County Superior Court documents, Ramon Sotelo-Gonzalez, age 42, and his son, Guillermo Sotelo Nunez, age 19, have both were charged with 1st degree burglary while armed with a deadly weapon on October 13th.

Guillermo was already wanted on warrants after eluding a Washington State Patrol trooper on October 5th. According to court documents,  he was driving a 1993 Lexus GS300 northbound on I-5 at excessive speed. When a WSP trooper pulled out behind the Lexus it appear to speed up. It then exited at Slater Road and went north at high speed on Pacific Highway. The trooper caught up to the vehicle at the cul-de-sac on Patriot Court, north of W Smith Road. Guillermo left the vehicle and the trooper pursued on foot until losing sight of him.

Returning to the Lexus, the trooper found an opened and partially consumed bottle of alcohol and evidence of a passenger. Reviewing his vehicle’s onboard video, a female, later identified as a juvenile, could be seen leaving the Lexus and running between two nearby houses. With that information, a K-9 unit located her hiding behind the houses.

Then, on October 13th, Ferndale Police responded to a report of a fight at the Ferndale Super 8 Motel on Barrett Road.

According to court documents, several people were seen running away from the motel when the officers arrived. One pointed to Guillermo’s father, Ramon, and shouted, “he has a gun!”

According to information provided to police at the scene, a group friends were in a room at the motel. The group included Guillermo and a girlfriend. Witness said Guillermo had hit his girlfriend and was kicked out of the room by the group. He later returned with his father who began banging on the door. When the door was cracked opened with the chain lock in place, Ramon kicked the door open. After a brief scuffle, he was pushed back out into the hall. Someone in the room saw Ramon had a weapon and fearing he would use it, people in the group began jumping out of the motel room window. It was then police arrived.

Two handguns were discovered when officers searched Ramon.

In addition to the burglary charge, Whatcom County Jail records show Ramon was also booked on the charge of being a criminal accomplice. Guillermo was also booked on the charges of

  • 2nd and 3rd degree driving while license was suspended
  • attempting to elude a police vehicle
  • reckless driving
  • minor in possession/consuming alcohol
  • criminal accomplice
  • 4th degree assault
  • reckless endangerment
  • obstructing a police officer
  • failure to appear on the charges of resisting arrest and minor in possession/consuming alcohol.

As of the date of this article, Ramon had been released on $10,000 bond while Guillermo remained in custody in lieu of bond.
