UPDATED: Facebook decides Ferndale is now named Perth

If you are a Facebook user and/or have a business page on it, you may have noticed recent attempts to identify you are from “Ferndale, WA” are being ignored. Instead, it is replaced with “Perth” when your friends and others see your posts and events.

At first, it seemed like such an awkward anomaly it could be expected to be remedied quickly. But after a few weeks, it has become a combination of annoyance and humor.

While no one at Facebook has responded to Discover Ferndale’s inquiries asking how this identity crisis came about and if a fix is in the works, the logic behind it is relatively easy to piece together.

Perth is located in Australia, Western Australia (WA) to be specific. And Perth includes a suburb known as Ferndale. So somewhere in the great conglomeration of software that is Facebook, “Ferndale WA” has become equal to “Perth.”

While some people have resorted to disabling their location on their personal profiles to avoid confusion, business page admins are not as quick to disable location information since, after all, they are using Facebook to help drive customers to their locations.

Discover Ferndale will continue to monitor the situation because, frankly and with all due respect to the fine people of Perth, we don’t want to change our name to “Discover Perth.”

UPDATE 9/10/16
It appears a fix has been made and Ferndale, WA is now represented as “Ferndale” again instead of “Perth.”
