Everything You Need to Start the New School Year Right

back to school stock grfxWhether you are transferring from another school or simply starting a new year at the same school (and everything in between), it can be complicated. The following information has been compiled from various sources to help parents and students prepare for the new year.

Enrolling at a school

To enroll at one of the Ferndale schools go to the office at the neighborhood school to be enrolled in. The high school offices open August 17th and middle school and elementary school offices open August 19th. School offices will be open from 8:30am to 3:30pm.

Beforehand, you can download the enrollment forms from the School District website. These forms are chock-full of the information the State requires schools to collect. You can download the transfer forms too.

To determine which school to register with, click here to use the locator provided by the Ferndale School District. It will also provide bus stop information.

Horizon and Vista Middle School orientation for incoming 6th graders and new students will be offered August 27, at 5pm. The location is presumably at each school but check any information sent from the school to be sure.

School supplies

Elementary school students are will have school supplies provided by the Ferndale School District. This is the first year the School District provides supplies for all elementary students. Backpacks are not included although there are some available for students in the free and reduced lunch program. Check with your school’s office.

Middle School and High School students have much more varied supply requirements which are directly tied to the courses they elect to take. Students will be required to provide the supplies required for the courses they signup for. Students in the free and reduced lunch program are asked to visit their school’s counseling office to arrange for supplies on the first day of school.

Other frequently asked questions

How old must a student be to enroll in kindergarten?
Kindergarten students must be five years old prior to September 1.

How recent must a physical exam be for sports eligibility?
There are no elementary school sports so this is not an issue there.

Middle schools have allowed one exam to cover 7th and 8th grades but the sports eligibility form has not been updated to reflect 6th grade middle school students. So that is an unknown. Check with your school.

High schools require physical exams be done less than 13 months prior. Physical exams done for middle school sports are not acceptable for high school sports.

My student did not show up on a class list. Now what?
Sometimes missing immunizations or other enrollment requirements will cause a student to not be completely enrolled. Check with the school office during office hours to find out what is missing and how to provide it.
