Typically, enjoying something like a parade from the comfort of your sofa means watching it on TV. But some long-time Ferndale parade watchers have taken it to a new level.
Brad and Kerri Hand along with their dog, Dally, have been enjoying the Old Settlers’ Picnic Grand Parade from the comfort of a sofa for about 10 years. As seen from the photo taken during last weekend’s parade, they place it strategically on the crosswalk where the parade route turns onto 1st Avenue from Main Street.
According to Brad, a lifelong resident of Ferndale, “When our girls were younger, I came up with the idea to put casters on the legs of the couch so I can roll it around in the garage, since it is our “garage” couch. I figured, why sit in a chair when we can kick back and watch a parade from the couch? Now it’s just a tradition with us.”
The Hands said they often hear people saying, “Hey! What a great idea!,” but few appear to be making the effort.
