FERNDALE, Wash. — Ferndale Police Department (FPD) officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Ferndale Terrace about 3:00am on May 8, 2026.
Michael Steven Daniels, Jr. arrived at the residence of a former spouse in violation of a pretrial domestic violence no-contact order. Daniels entered the residence and engaged in a physical altercation with the former spouse. Daniels took a phone from the resident and displayed a handgun.
A male resident returned during the altercation. A physical fight occurred between Daniels and the male resident, during which the resident struck Daniels with an unknown object. Daniels moved about 10 feet away and fired multiple shots, striking the male resident.
Daniels encountered 2 juveniles while fleeing the residence. A physical confrontation occurred with 1 juvenile, and Daniels threatened both before leaving the scene.
FPD officers located the male resident with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim identified the shooter as “Mike” before being transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Lummi Police Department and Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) took Daniels into custody at a residence in the 4000 block of Tsata Lane. A police K-9 search located a concealed handgun near the residence.
Daniels was booked into Whatcom County Jail on the following charges:
- 1st-degree murder
- 1st-degree burglary (domestic violence)
- felony domestic violence court order violation
- 1st-degree unlawful possession of a firearm
- 1st-degree robbery (domestic violence)
2nd-degree assault (domestic violence)
