Multi-agency emphasis patrol targets commercial vehicles in north Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — On May 6, 2026, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) announced their Field Operations Bureau, Commercial Vehicle Division, and the Whatcom County Sheriff Office Traffic Unit recently conducted a move over emphasis patrol.

The operation primarily targeted commercial vehicles in north Whatcom County. According to people witnesses the patrol, this occurred on I-5 between Ferndale and Blaine.

The move over law requires motorists to yield and slow down when approaching a stationary emergency services vehicle or other vehicles with visual lights on or while traveling in a work zone with 2 or more lanes. Yield means moving a lane away or if unsafe to do that, lowering speed to 10mph below the speed limit or to 50mph, whichever is less.

According to the announcement, law enforcement performed 119 traffic stops and 78 commercial vehicle inspections. The emphasis resulted in arrests for suspended licenses and ignition interlock violations. Officers also took commercial vehicles out of service due to equipment violations.
