Updated: Crash involving 2 motorcycles in Skagit County kills Blaine man

SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) report a 64-year-old Blaine man died after a crash involving 2 motorcycles Sunday, September 25th, about 2:45pm. The crash occurred during the annual Oyster Run event in Anacortes which draws thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts.

According to a press memo from WSP, troopers were dispatched to the intersection of SR20 and Bayview Edison Road about 2:45pm on Sunday.

According to the WSP investigation, a 30-year-old Snohomish man was riding a 2019 Yamaha MT-07 westbound on SR20 east of Bayview Edison Road in the left lane. A 2018 Yamaha FJR1300, driven by the Blaine man, was eastbound on SR20 when it entered the intersection with a green light to turn left onto Bayview Edison Road northbound.

The westbound motorcycle approached the intersection, crossed 2 lanes to a right turn only lane, failed to stop at the red light and entered the intersection. The 2 motorcycles collided with the MT-07 striking the FJR1300.

The Snohomish man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The Blaine man was transported to Island Hospital in Anacortes where he was declared dead. Next of kin notification was provided by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

Both men were wearing helmets and had motorcycle endorsements on their driver’s licenses. It was unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The cause remained under investigation.


This story was corrected at 9:30am based on an update from WSP better clarifying which driver was associated with which vehicle. It was corrected again at 4pm based on another update from WSP with an updated incident narrative.
