Each winter, WSDOT closes the narrow section of road with sharp curves and steep slopes to vehicle traffic.
The road was reported reopened about 10:30am.
Once this section of road is reopened, more than 650 vehicles/day travel to Artist Point to hike, camp & recreate.
12:50pm: Whatcom Chief is back in service.
Whatcom County Sheriff's Office deputies have been dispatched to locations on the detour route several times.
Lake Whatcom Boulevard, between Sudden Valley and Sedro-Woolley, is to be closed for days.
The project was previously scheduled to begin today.
