BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 200 block of Harris Avenue about 3:30am on Saturday, March 1, 2025, due to report of a car versus train crash.

According to a statement from the Bellingham Police Department, a “taxi driver took the turn onto Harris St wrong and drove off the road across tracks and into the gravel, getting the car stuck.” At the same time, a train was slowly approaching. The driver and passenger in the taxi were able to get out before the train collided with the SUV.

According to first responder radio transmissions at the time, the freight train was not allowed to move until a “train master” was able to be on scene. Witnesses reported at least 1 crossing in the area was closed for about 2 hours.

The MV Kennicott, an Alaska Marine Highway System vessel, had arrived at the nearby Bellingham Cruise Terminal a short time prior to the incident and was able to unload and load passengers and vehicles with minimal impact according to a witness.

Driver of the taxi found to be under the influence and arrested.
