Businesses damaged in Lummi Island fire on Wednesday

LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 7:40am on Wednesday, May 8th, due to a report of smoke in a commercial building in the 4200 block of Legoe Bay Road on Lummi Island.

Whatcom County Fire District 11 (WCFD11) Fire Chief Michael Lish told Whatcom News that a worker from an adjacent business made the call to report the fire.

WCFD11 personnel arrived to find light smoke coming from the multi-unit building. While making entry it was discovered that the interior of a unit housing a gift shop was fully involved.

Lish said the fire in the unit was extremely hot and they battled to ensure the fire did not spread to adjacent units that contained flammable materials.

In the process of knocking down the fire, firefighters discovered a false ceiling hid a 4-foot void space in the attic that was hiding burning material according to Lish. They were able to knock down that fire before it spread to other units via the attic.

There were no injuries to occupants nor to firefighters, Lish said. They were onsite for about 4 hours.

There was also some damage to adjacent units and shared electrical service was cut during the firefight.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office.
