Whatcom County Fire District 7 personnel responded to a structure fire call across the street from the Washington Street fire station this afternoon shortly before 4pm this afternoon, January 3rd.
Residents were evacuating and white smoke could be seen wafting from exit doors when firefighters arrived.
WCFD7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said he was directed to a ground floor apartment and found a kitchen fire climbing the cupboards that required a fire extinguisher to put out.
Boyko said 2 people in the apartment suffered minor injuries and were being assessed. Other residents of the building were being treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

I was in the apartment when the fire started. I suffered 1st and 2nd degree arm burns. It was pretty scary. Thank the lord that we are all okay. It could’ve been a lot worse!!
