BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Washington State Patrol announced today, October 19th, they are seeing witnesses and dashcam video from anyone who had traveled through northbound I-5 south of the Lakeway Drive interchange on October 6th around the time of a fatal crash.
First responders were dispatched to the northbound lanes of I-5 at the Lakeway Drive interchange about 9pm on Thursday, October 6th, due to reports of a multivehicle crash.
According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol (WSP), a yet-to-be-identified vehicle and a 2021 Honda FXBBS motorcycle were northbound on I-5 south of Lakeway Drive when they collided. The 45-year-old motorcycle rider from Ferndale was ejected and ended up on the right lane. The unknown vehicle fled the crash scene.
A witness pulled over to the left shoulder to check on the motorcycle rider and there was an uninvolved disabled vehicle on the right shoulder with its hazard flashers on. A semi-truck approaching the scene attempted a lane change and struck the motorcyclist and then struck the witness’ vehicle on the left shoulder.
The motorcycle rider was declared dead at the scene.
WSP’s announcement today said, “At this time there have been no witnesses to this collision that have provided any description on the running vehicle.” WSP are actively investigating the crash as a hit-and-run incident and are asking for witnesses and dashcam videos around the time of the crash.
If you or someone you know may have witnessed the collision or have any information about the involved vehicle, please call or email Detective Jeff Rhue at (360) 654-1140 or Jeff.Rhue@wsp.wa.gov.
