WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — On April 16, 2026, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Washington State Patrol (WSP) released data regarding the first year of the Work Zone Speed Camera Program. The program began enforcement on April 16, 2025.
WSDOT reported the program utilized 6 cameras across 46 job sites in 675 deployments. Enforcement data included the following:
- Speeding on I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) decreased from 60% of drivers to 30% during enforcement
- The I-405/Brickyard to SR527 Improvement Project reported a 20% reduction in speeding vehicles on SR 522 after enforcement deployments concluded.
- WSP issued 65,000 total infractions, with 59,000 of those classified as first-time violations.
- Repeat offenders accounted for 9% of infractions, totaling about 6,000 violations.
The program is scheduled to expand to 15 cameras by 2027 and will include operations in eastern Washington.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the fine for a first-time infraction will increase from $0 to $125. The fine for a second or subsequent infraction will remain $248.
WSP troopers review images and data from trailer-mounted cameras to verify violations. Notices of infraction are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle within 30 days. The violations are recorded as non-moving infractions and do not affect insurance or driving records. Unpaid fines are added to vehicle registration renewals.
”So far, nearly 9% of the infractions we see are repeat offenders,” stated WSP Chief John Batiste. “That’s close to 6,000 people who have not only received the fine, but who hopefully have heard the message – SLOW DOWN in our work zones, it will save lives.”
