WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 10:30am on Saturday, May 2, 2026, to the northbound lanes of I-5 north of the Old Fairhaven Parkway interchange due to reports of a 3-car crash with injuries.
At the time of the crash, the right lane was closed due to WSDOT maintenance work further to the north.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News the crash involved 3-vehicles, a Toyota Highlander, a Tesla, and a Toyota pickup. The driver and passenger from the Tesla and the pickup driver were transported by emergency services to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center. The Tesla and Toyota pickup were towed from the scene. The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
In a second incident at 12:10pm, first responders were dispatched to the 4100 block of Valley Highway (SR9) in Van Zandt due to reports of a 2-vehicle crash. Both northbound and southbound lanes were blocked.
Harding said this was a 2-vehicle fatality collision involving a Kymco UXV 450i “side by side” utility vehicle and a Kia Sportage SUV.
A WSP press memo said a 73-year-old Deming man driving the Kymco was northbound and was making a left hand turn when it collided with the southbound Kia. He was declared deceased at the scene.
The 16-year-old driver of the Kia was transported to Peace health St Joseph Medical Center for precautionary reasons according to Harding. The initial investigation determined drugs or alcohol did not appear to have been involved.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes were closed while troopers on scene conducted the investigation.
About 12:50pm, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported, “There is no time estimate for reopening the road. People should seek alternate routes.”
UPDATE 4pm: WSDOT reports all lanes of Valley Highway have been reopened.
