The City of Ferndale announced today some neighborhoods will experience “a water flush” starting March 28th and continuing at least 8 days.
According to the city’s announcement, “a water flush” is where water is forced through the water mains (pipes) at high velocity to remove mineral buildup. This may lead to discolored water in your home or business if the water is being used during or immediately following the flushing in your neighborhood.
The discoloration is caused by iron (red color) or manganese (black color) particles being dislodged from the water main which can stain porcelain and laundry. If discoloration occurs, open the cold tap nearest the water meter—usually a basement sink—to full flow until the water runs clear. In some situations this may take 5 to 10 minutes. It is also advised that you make sure your water is clear before doing laundry or other projects for which discolored water could cause problems.
Recommendations from public works supervisor Bo Westford for the days when the water flush is happening in your neighborhood,
* Close the main water valve inside your home.
* Do not do laundry on the day of the planned flush.
* Shut off the intake to your hot water heater.
* Avoid running your dishwasher on the day of the planned flush.
* Open a bath faucet or outside faucet first after flush is complete.
The map below shows where and when to expect water flushing in the different neighborhoods north of Thornton Street. The process will begin on March 28th in the yellow segment on the map. According to the city, the process will take 2 days before moving east on to neighborhoods in the next colored segment on the map. This schedule assumes there are no surprises along the way.
Yellow – March 28th and 29th
Red – March 30th and 31st
Blue – April 1st and 4th (no water flushing during the weekend)
Green – April 5th and 6th
