UPDATED: Vehicle vs bicycle incident closes Birch Bay-Lynden Road

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to Birch Bay-Lynden Road due to report of a vehicle vs bicycle incident between Kickerville and Hamm Roads about 4:50am on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), the bicyclist was transported by aid personnel to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The vehicle driver, identified as a 56-year-old Blaine man, showed signs of being impaired and was taken into custody, transported to St Joseph Medical Center and then booked into the Whatcom County Jail. He was charged with driving under the influence and vehicular assault.

Both directions of that section of Birch Bay-Lynden Road were closed for hours following the incident.

WCSO reported that section of Birch Bay-Lynden Road was reopened by 10am.
